In the era of SEO-driven slop we find ourselves in, having good go-to sources for information is paramount. Here are some of my favorites. Some caveats:
- I refuse to browse the web without uBlock Origin. Some of these sites may have ads that make them less usable without an adblocker.
- This list is still a work in progress, and was last updated April 30, 2026
Technical and Programming
linux.die.net/man: useful for looking at Linux man pages on the web. Useful if you're momentarily away from your Linux box, or if you're using one of those minimal installs that don't include the man pages.
RealPython: When I'm trying to do something in Python (including many libraries) and I need a little more hand-holding than the official docs, RealPython is where I go. Note that you may hit a sign-up wall after browsing enough pages, but this can be dealt with by clearing your site cookies.
Paul's Online Math Notes: Useful resources for calculus and differential equations. As you get to college level math, resources breaking things down get fewer and farther between, so it's
Better Explained: Another good resource breaking down college level math concepts, including a lot of visualizations and emphasis on developing an intuition about what's going on.
DistroWatch: DistroWatch publishes news about and reviews of all sorts of Linux and BSD distros. They have both editor and user reviews of all manner distros, mainstream and obscure. They also have a search feature which lets you filter by certain traits (size, init system, supporting particular hardware architectures, etc.). They also have some tutorials and a Q&A forum/
Food and Cooking
The Woks of Life: Authentic, clearly-written Chinese recipes.
Home Improvement
This Old House: Household repairs done right, with explanatory pictures. The only caveat is that articles don't seem to be well indexed and the website homepage is primarily focused on promoting the TV show, so you might need to do a site-specific search with an external search engine to find what you need.
I'm still trying to find good resources on cleaning and organization.
